2007 Groundwater Teacher Training Camp

Annual Groundwater Teacher Training Camp held July 16 through 20, 2007

  Day 1 Schedule

Teachers learn inquiry method and experiment with groundwater simulators.

The City of Battle Creek and the Battle Creek Area Mathematics and Science Center sponsored opportunities for professional development in science through the the Groundwater Teacher Training Camp, held July 16 through 20, 2007 at the Battle Creek Area Mathematics and Science Center.

Course Presenters:

  • Alan Kehew, Ph.D. Professor of Geology, Western Michigan University: Water cycle, Water table, Aquifers.
  • Duane Hampton, Ph.D. Professor of Geology, Western Michigan University: Saturate, Porous.
  • Mary Lindow, Biology and Environmental Science, Battle Creek Area Mathematics and Science Center: Filtration, Interaction between surface water and groundwater.
  • Christine Kosmowski, Environmental Program Coordinator, City of Battle Creek: Pollution, Pollution prevention

  Day 2 Schedule

Drilling and hydrogeology lecture.

This was a week-long, very hands-on and inquiry-based day camp with the purpose of training teachers about groundwater and drinking water protection (also known as wellhead protection). Teachers were given background in hydrogeology and glacial geology to better understand the concept of groundwater and aquifers.

Teachers took a field trip to Lake Michigan, saw a water well drilled with state-of-the-art technology, and learned how to use Groundwater Model Simulators to take back to their classrooms. The City of Battle Creek’s drinking water supply and the City’s Wellhead Protection Plan were used as real life examples.

  Day 3 Schedule

Glacial geology lecture, Project WET activity and glacial geology field trip to Lake Michigan.

This course emphasizes the E2.4B, E3.p1C, E4.p1A, E4.p1B, E4.p3A, E4.p3B, E4.p3C, E4.1A, E4.1B, and E4.1C benchmarks. Participants had two registration options: (1) training 9 for CEUs (pending), or (2) three graduate credits in science education through Western Michigan University. Greater Battle Creek Area teachers could qualify for a scholarship. Contact us for details.

Project WET certification was also available.

Teachers were required to develop a Microsoft PowerPoint lesson to receive credit/grade. Participants were encouraged to bring laptop computers.

Meeting Times: 8:00 a.m. — 5:00 p.m. all days.

To register for this course, participants had to do any of the following before July 9, 2007:
