FREE LAWN SOIL TESTING While fertilizers may be necessary for a healthy lawn, too much fertilizer wastes money, ruins plants and pollutes water. Don't guess, soil test. Participants found out the right amount of fertilizer to apply to their lawns that will benefit them without polluting our waters. Participants collected ten representative soil samples (extending seven inches below the surface) from their lawns; mixed them together; removed all roots, thatch, plant materials, rocks or gravel from the samples; then placed one cup of the remaining mixtures in plastic bags or containers and brought them to a participating retailer in southwest Michigan. Calhoun County locations were: Albion – Jolly Green Junction; Battle Creek Area - Battle Creek Farm Bureau (Battle Creek Store), Lakeview Hardware, Level Park Hardware, Lowe's, and Scooters Hardware; Marshall – Darling's Hardware. The City of Battle Creek hosted a Low Impact Development (LID) Workshop on Friday May 18, 2007 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Battle Creek Country Club, 318 Country Club Drive, Battle Creek, MI 49015. The purpose of the workshop was to explain LID principles and techniques, to highlight the City of Battle Creek’s new Storm Water Technical Reference Manual (TRM), and to tour LID demonstration sites within the City of Battle Creek. The use of LID finds a balance between new- or re- development while limiting the impact on the environment. The LID approach differs from conventional methods as it promotes the highest and best use of the natural landscape. LID permits natural features or processes to remove pollutants, or to prevent pollution from occurring in the first place. Some of the key features of LID include: replanting or protecting existing vegetation; reducing impervious surfaces such as roads, parking lots, and rooftops; creating permeable pavements, rain gardens for bioretention, and other small scale storm water controls; and clustering houses and other buildings on a site so that storm water can follow more natural drainage patterns.
